DIY Bedroom Remodel Minus the Demolition

While remodels can certainly be on a large scale, and may even require that you gut the room entirely, it doesn’t have to be this elaborate. In fact, you can remodel your bedroom without turning it into the next demolition derby – here’s how.   Make a Budget First Before you begin dreaming of all the possibilities your bedroom holds, the smartest move is to create a budget. While a major bedroom remodel can cost you upward of $100,000, according to Porch.com, the average cost of a minor remodel can fall anywhere on a scale from $500 – $8,000 depending on how complex it is. Figure out what budget you can reasonably afford but don’t forget to factor in materials and time as well as any costs such as a professional contractor. If you are remodeling to sell, you might also consider adding a home stager to your budget to help your home sell when it’s time and ensure all your hard work is adequately displayed.   Clear the Clutter to Get Organized In order to make any sort of noticeable change in your bedroom, it’s a good idea to dedicate some time to decluttering. The closet and flat surfaces such as dressers and nightstands are most likely your biggest clutter collectors, so focus your efforts here first. Get rid of any clothes that you don’t wear or no longer fit, including shoes. Keep those surfaces clutter-free by using a catch-all bowl or tray. To create even more space, check out this list of storage ideas such as a bookshelf wall, window bench, or corner shelving (all of which are aesthetically pleasing).   Start with the Bed When you are remodeling, your initial thought is to leave the bed alone, but why not give the focal point of the room a refresh, too? Beds are expensive, so make it look completely different by buying a new sheet set, mixing and matching pillowcases, or giving the headboard a fresh coat of paint. Add a pop of color by adding a mirror, picture, or painting above the bed. While your focus is on the bed, consider whether now is the time to get a new mattress to improve your sleep as well. Any investment in sleep is a good one, but be sure you know what to avoid when reviewing your options. Warning signs could be a mattress that is too soft, too firm, too cheap, or even too expensive. Bad reviews in addition to a lack of warranty might mean you should consider a different brand.   Choose a Paint Color Once you’ve decided on bedding, you can then paint the room to match. In fact, painting is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to completely change the look and feel of the room. Bear in mind that dark colors tend to make a room feel smaller, while lighter ones open up the space. It can be hard to envision what your room will look like after it is painted, so give Home Depot’s Color By Room tool a try to get an idea of what the end result will look like, as well as complementary color suggestions.   Light It Up When it comes to lighting, who knew there were so many choices? There are beautiful options including table lamps, floor lamps, chandeliers, sconces, and swinging-arm fixtures, but be sure you are choosing the right size so as not to overpower the room. Don’t be afraid to mix and match lighting. Overhead lighting with a dimmer switch gives you full control over the overhead lighting, while lamps and various light fixtures can provide accent lighting. You can even add color and a unique vibe by choosing a lamp in a funky shape or bright color. Keep in mind that any lighting projects that require electrical work should be left to a professional.   Remodeling your bedroom doesn’t require a complete do-over. Simple projects like decluttering, bedding changes, painting, and new lighting can give your bedroom a whole new look. Your bedroom is the canvas; all you have to do is pick up the paintbrush.   Suzie Wilson is an interior designer with more than 20 years experience.
